Lahore: Seventy years old Cleric Mufti Aziz-ur-Rehman confessed on Monday that he has been molesting his seminary student and was ashamed of it.
“I am the man molesting the young man in the video. I made a mistake and I’m ashamed of it,” confessional statement of Lahore based seventy years old cleric stated on Monday.
Punjab police arrested the cleric on Sunday after registering a case against him on complain of his student. His student accused the cleric of rape and videotaped the episodes of molestation which he presented before the police as an evidence.
On Sunday, Punjab police arrested the cleric for molesting his student. The 70-year-old was booked after a video of him sexually assaulting the student went viral on social media platforms.
The video of molestation went viral on social media platforms forcing the police to register First Information Report and arrest the accused.
According to detail, the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) police arrested the accused on Sunday. Police teams arrested the Aziz-ur-Rehman, former Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI) leader Mufti Azizur Rehman from his native town of Mianwali. Police teams also took his two sons into custody for threatening to kill the complainant.
It is worth mentioning that the North Cantonment police had on June 17 registered a case under charges of sexual assault and criminal intimidation against Mufti Rehman, his sons Altafur Rehman and Atiqur Rehman and three accomplices on the complaint of a student of Jamia Manzoorul Islam, Cantonment.
The victim had shared a video clip of the sexual assault as an evidence with police and the administration of the seminary. The clip took social media by storm with growing calls for strict action.
According to a news report published by Dawn, in his complaint the student had alleged that Mufti Rehman had got him and another student expelled on the charge of cheating in examinations of Wafaqul Madaris for three years.
He said he pleaded with the Mufti to allow him to take the examination by removing charges against him, but he sought sexual favours for doing so. “I had no option but to submit to his demand,” he said.
“For three years, the Mufti would assault me on Fridays. When I complained to the seminary administration, no one would believe me,” Dawn quoted the victim as saying.
The student said he later started recording the episodes on his mobile phone and showed it to the Wafaqul Madaris al Arabia nazim. “After that, Mufti Rehman and his sons started threatening me with dire consequences, even threatening to take my life,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mufti Rehman released a video message on social media in which he claimed his innocence. He said the boy in the video had drugged him, after which he was not in his senses.
Molesting of kids and young men by the clerics is becoming common across Pakistan.
In April this year, Punjab police arrested a prayer leader and his accomplice for allegedly molesting seminary students and filming the heinous acts for the last three years.
The victims included four minor girls and a boy, who were all students at the seminary. The case only came to light when the prayer leader and his accomplice, who filmed the incidents, had a disagreement, police said.
The incidents occurred in the premises of a mosque in Dhoke Phulari village in Chakwal District, located in the jurisdiction of Tamman Police Station.
