Harassment of transgender community by police officials in Swat raises eyebrows

SWAT: President of Transgender Association Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Miss Arzoo has alleged that, a group of extorters were harassing transgender community of Mingora City, in Swat district.

Addressing a press conference along with other colleagues, here at Swat Press Club, Arzoo alleged that among the extorters, some police persons were also involved, who through coercion and threats were collecting money from transgender living in Mingora City.

” We demand security for transgender community and appeal to the high official of police department, to take stern action against the criminals. Our colleague named Komal was harassed, extorted, and threatened last week and police refused to lodge a complaint against the criminal in Police station”, Arzoo told, adding tha would record their protest in streets and cities if their complaint was not addressed.

She maintained that, her organization was in contact with international organization, working for the welfare of transgender, in order to educate and create job opportunities for them. “Unfortunately, people of our community can’t go to schools , due to social taboos and treatment of the general masses. I urge the Chief Minister ( CM) KP to establish separate educational institute for this community, so that instead of becoming burden on the society, they also contribute in the development of the state”, Arzoo added.

Senior lawyer and human rights activist Shaukat Salim advocate vowed that transgender were the respectable citizen of the state according to the constitution of the country. He asked the provincial government to provide security and facilities to this marginalized community in the province.

” Human rights organizations throughout the world, provide equal rights to transgender in the field of health, education, jobs and all sectors of life. We need to treat them with dignity and respect.

The transgender, later, arranged a protest rally outside the press club, and chanted slogans against the culprits and alleged policemen.
